time to make some spring home updates!
Despite the somewhat crazy weather (Uhm… Hello winter blossom one day, Polar Vortex the next!), spring is on the way so I’ve already begun making a few seasonal update changes around the house.
Even if the actual warmer temperatures are still some
weeks days away, a spring home update can at least make you feel like the new season has arrived.
In this latest instalment of seasonal home update posts, as well as showcasing how I’ve styled a few pieces from the A by Amara SS18 collection, I’m also sharing a few tried and tested tips for carrying out your own spring home update.
Think of it like the Field Of Dreams baseball pitch… if we style it, spring will come!
De-Clutter & Pair Back
After all the extra bits and pieces that appear to multiply over the Holiday Season, spring feels like the perfect time to have a major edit in every corner of the house.
January saw the major wardrobe clear out finally take place and the kitchen was completely refurbed. So it only felt right that I carry on the mission and give the living room a bit of a make under and refresh.
When it comes to interior styling, I have a tendency to get a bit carried away (Mr OS would heartily agree with me on this!), so I often have to revisit my own efforts and edit them. A lot!
Although this time, he thoroughly approved of the grey felted baskets for storing the paraphernalia that would have otherwise been kicking around the room on the floor or tables.
Slippers, books, hand cream, cashmere socks – all hidden away but in reach at the end of the sofa!
Flowers, Plants & Greenery Oh My!
Nothing says new season like adding plant life in any shape or form… and nothing says spring is here like Amara’s SS18 Greenhouse trend.
The fresh feel of their styling for the campaign and the overriding vibe of bringing the outside in has really inspired me to add more plants and blooms around the house.
I love popping into my local florist and choosing a few random (green and white only) stems. Lately I’ve been choosing pussy willow, eucalyptus, white tulips, ranunculus and white freesias.
Just the very act of buying fresh flowers brings a smile in itself. But bringing them home and spending time sorting them into vases and pots and dotting them around the house is definitely an Elevate The Everyday worthy activity.
You also feel you gain much more flower power for your financial outlay!
Keep some cosy elements
Whilst it feels like a good idea to swap out fabrics for lighter versions in the summer, spring can be a bit unpredictable in terms of temperatures. This is after all the UK we’re talking about here!
I still love to have lots of cushions to snuggle into of an evening but do swap them for more seasonally appropriate versions about now.
Gone are the winter stags and back out come the graphic monochrome and others in lighter colours. The Gibberd Crochet cushion has a subtle element of shimmer which is perfect for spring without being OTT. I also love the Hester Velvet Cushion.
Shake off the winter gloom by washing curtains, freshening up paint where needed and changing the lighting.
With a little more daylight and less grey (dark dreary) hours, I switched around some lamps in the living room and put one away as it’s no longer needed on lighter days. Instead I placed some candles on these Marwood Pillar Candle Holders on the shelf for cosy evening light.
Speaking of candles, if you have a white walls in your living room and a penchant for scented candles, you’ll know all too well that a fresh coat of paint is essential at least every two years. Our living room is now in desperate need since it was last painted here.
Another job to add to the (ever-growing) list!
Re-arrange your vignettes
“Rearrange your Whooby Whatties now??” I hear you ask. Ever since I read Styled by Emily Henderson, I’ve been obsessed with creating vignettes – those addictive little spots of styled surfaces.
I could honestly spend hours doing this. I suspect that Mr OS thinks I’m playing mind games with him to see if he can spot which things have moved around (again) when he comes home from work of an evening.
I’m not. I’m just obsessed.
Whilst autumn and winter are about the detail, in spring I prefer a simpler vignette… “Less is more” I tell myself as I re-arrange things. Yet again.

My best advice would be to keep experimenting with styling your surfaces. Book shelves, side tables, trays on foot stools and accent shelves – nothing is safe in this house when it comes to a bit of vignette shuffling!
And treat it like that famous accessory mantra proffered by Coco Chanel – before you leave the house, always take one thing off.
I’m pretty sure that it was when I was looking for objects to style up for my living room vignettes that I first discovered Amara. Whether your thing is muted minimal or eclectic and bright, they’ll be able to provide you with plenty of objects to style.
And shuffle about on repeat!
There you have it – a few things to try whilst we wait for spring to arrive in all it’s (Polar Vortex free) glory. At the very least, all that sprucing and re-arranging will keep you active and warm!
I hope this has provided some interior inspiration for the new season ahead and I’d love to know if you carry out any seasonal home updates for spring?
