Six Essential post vacation treats

Six essential post vacation treats

fight off those back to reality blues with a few post vacation treats

So you’ve just returned from your summer holidays and the reality of back to work/back to school/back to routine is looming on the horizon. How to fight off those back to reality blues?

With these essential post vacation treats – that’s how! Coming home needn’t mean that the things that #ElevateTheEveryday have to stop. If anything, holidays show us how time to indulge in life’s simple pleasures can bring joy and a sense of well being. All the more important then to maintain that mindset once you’re back home.

Here are a few favourite treats that help to preserve the feel good factor long after my suitcase is unpacked…

post holiday cup of tea face mask and a scented candle

How do you take your tea?

Corny and a something of a Brits abroad cliche I know, but really, what feels better than a cup of good old English tea made just the way you like it?  And in your favourite mug!

Don’t get me wrong, I love coffee more than life itself and am generally happy to jump straight on to the hard stuff upon waking in a holiday destination. But once I get back home, there’s something so comforting about a morning cuppa in my own bed – it’s the perfect, gently caffeinated prelude to firing up the Nespresso machine for the rest of the morning.

post holiday hair saviour

Whilst I fly off with all those good intentions such as not exposing my mop to the sun without first slathering it in some kind of conditioner or continually wearing a hat, my hair always comes back feeling somewhat fried.

A post holiday hair treatment is a much needed treat and I like one that involves minimal effort. The new Balm-To-Oil Pre-Shampoo Masque from the brilliant Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil range can be applied to dry hair, left on for twenty minutes and you then just shampoo and condition as normal.

I swear my hair actually sighed with relief when I used this last week! This haircare gem will be available at Bumble & Bumble from 26 October.

new season glow

My ability to look toward the forthcoming season, albeit a little too eagerly some might say, is a constant source of amusement in our house. Step off the plane post summer holiday and I’m already thinking about kicking up piles of autumn leaves and wearing cashmere!

I love to change over the home fragrances as soon as the school summer holidays end and this year, I was thrilled to try the new signature candle from The White Company, aptly named Autumn.

Fruity & floral with notes of pear, quince and apricot blended with musk and amber, The White Company describe this like stepping on crunchy leaves. So that’s me sold then!

Snuggle Up

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen this beautiful chunky knit throw by Lauren Aston popping up a few times. I’ve had my eye on one of her Woolacombe Throws for ages and in true topsy-turvey style, I decided to treat our home to one just as the weather started to heat up.

I know it’ll come into it’s own once those winter evenings arrive and meanwhile, I can’t resist stroking it every time I walk past it nestling on the back of the sofa.

And it goes very nicely with the mood created by a cup of tea and that seasonally appropriate candle!

saving face

In the same way that my hair needs rescuing post summer holiday, my skin usually needs the beauty equivalent of a knight in shining armour too.

I’ve been a long term fan of Eve Lom’s products (Hello minimal packaging on my bathroom shelf!) and love the way my skin feels after a good deep cleanse with the Rescue Mask. Great for getting rid of impurities after a week of suncream and perspiration poolside.

keep getting lost in a book

One of the joys of going away for a week is taking the chance to get lost in a good book. When I was in Majorca I read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. Not easy subject matter but it was such a beautiful and sensitively written book and I was truly captivated. Not sure if I want to see the movie now or not though.

I also packed The Woman I Wanted To Be by Diane von Furstenberg. I barely had time to get going with this whilst I was away but now that I’m back home, I’m trying to find the time to pick it up of an evening and keep reading – her story is truly inspiring.

For the most part reading for hours on end is a holiday indulgence but this time I want to maintain that momentum as much as possible.

Do you have any indulgences, rituals or routines that you carry out when you get back from your holiday?

Possibly a bit of a sad thing to admit but one of my post vacation treats is definitely unpacking the suitcases! I LOVE this part of the homecoming – it makes me feel grounded, appreciative and reconnected to our home again and for me, is an essential part of settling back in.

That and climbing into a freshly made bed with White Company cotton sheets – Hello Happy Homecoming!

  1. That ‘coming home’ feeling is one of the best Amanda – I whole-heartedly agree! I have been firing up the Autumn candle pre-autumn too – which is probably a seasonal sin but the aroma is so so lovely.

    A fellow crunchy-leaves lover here!

    Enjoy settling back in.

    1. Thanks so much Monica! Looking forward to getting back to some sort of routine, albeit a bit of a new one. The Autumn candle is just beautiful isn’t it? Look forward to talking all things autumnal excitement with you soon! Amanda xx
