The July Beauty Edit – Bumper Edition!
Having not published one since April, it’s no wonder that the July beauty edit has turned out to be a bit of a bumper edition. You can’t keep a good beauty product addict down for long!
So let’s get straight to it.
The two brands seemingly taking over my makeup bag at the moment are Bobbi Brown and NARS. And not just because of their sleek black packaging (although I am a sucker for that) – they’re just SO GOOD!
I think I may have developed a
bit of a NARS obsession…
I think I may have developed a bit of a NARS obsession. Having already waxed lyrical on Instagram about their Radiance Primer and the Illuminator in Copacabana, I’ve since gone on to order a Matte Velvet Lip Pencil in Red Square and Dolce Vita… and the amazing Eye Paint in Porto Venere.
The eye paint is the perfect natural bone hue and the lip pencil in Dolce Vita is the best everyday rosy nude. I can’t carry off a true beige nude – it makes me look ill.
In the interests of lighter coverage and a needing a slightly darker shade for summer, I picked up a Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation at the airport on the way to Majorca. The level of coverage and silky feel needed for warmer days in this foundation is spot on for me.
And to go with it, a light creamy blush which really helps with the glow factor – Pot Rouge. Last minute beauty buys at Duty Free help make a holiday feel like even more of an occasion don’t they?
Eye Gloss – suffering for your sticky art
The Bobbi Brown Eye Gloss in Beach Nude is a bit of a funny creature. As in, I’ve been keen to try out an eye gloss for ages for that clean, slick look it gives.
But having gloss on your lids takes some getting used to. This one is a bit of a case of suffering for your sticky art!
Over this last year I’ve become a huge fan of either a cleansing oil (love this DECLÉOR Micellar Oil), to wash off or a balm that you take off with a warm cloth. It wasn’t until I finally got my hands on a copy of Sali Hughes’ book Pretty Honest (always late to the party), that I finally found my cleansing nirvana!
Two things Sali mentions had me prodding the page vigorously and saying “Yes! That!” out loud.
As much as I love a cleansing oil at night, the sopping wet, water down the pyjama sleeve part that Sali points out… not so much.
Cleansing Nirvana & no more soggy PJ Sleeves!
And the muslin cloths that accompany both Eve Lom and Liz Earle balms are soon kicked into touch when you replace them with an old fashioned terry cloth flannel. Of which I seem to have amassed a HUGE collection over the years. No, I have no idea why either. Until now.
The mild exfoliating action you get taking the balm off with a flannel is just heaven. Try it and see and I bet you’ll be a convert. Plus it kind of takes me back to being a kid!
So now, as per Sally’s sound advice, its oil in the morning pre stepping into the shower and balm and flannel at night. Bye Bye soggy PJ sleeves!
As always, St Tropez Everyday Mousse and their Gradual Tan Tinted Lotion for emergency leg cover is on my summer shopping list. Best to avoid using both on exceedingly hot and sticky days I find. Bleugh!
Zingy fresh fragrance is where its at for me in the warmer months both for me and the house.
I’ve been burning The White Company’s Ocean Tide candle these last few days – this is pure beachy heaven in a glass jar. And judging by how low its getting, I think its time for another order!
The & Other Stories beauty
section is beyond amazing…
And such is the addiction that I’ve started topping up my supplies with the odd *coughs* online order. Quite how another Broderie Anglaise dress “fell” into my basket too I’ll never know.
But back to more fragrant matters, their Méditerranéen range is pure fruity with a hint of light floral summer heaven for a morning shower.
And then to top off, my current everyday (and every evening) favourite fragrance spritz, Jo Loves – Pomelo. I think this might officially be the happiest perfume I’ve owned and now the smell reminds me of our recent stay in Majorca.
To finish my July beauty edit, theres a very pretty bottle of pale purple shimmer that arrived on my doorstep recently from Kevin Murphy. The Shimmer.Me.Blond shine mist is a gorgeous brightening spray that smells deliciously like Cream Soda – hello childhood memories!
Use as a conditioning treatment on damp hair pre-styling or spritz lightly onto dry ends to tame fly aways. And I would use it for no other reason than, as Lydia E Millen said on her Instagram – it looks like unicorn tears!
