All The Autumn Style Essentials You’ll Ever Need!

Autumn is the perfect time and excuse (like I need one), to take stock of the wardrobe, carry out a thorough edit and then figure out exactly what those missing pieces are.

Those all important autumn style essentials that will make getting dressed a cinch this season.

Before you head out on a mission or retire to the sofa with a glass of wine and the laptop, it helps to divide your seasonal shopping or wish list into three parts. Basics, Investments and Accessories.

When it comes to putting autumn outfits together, the indecisive weather, whilst sometimes a pain in the butt, provides numerous sartorial opportunities.

You can still have bare ankles, there’s plenty of chances to go without a full on coat just yet and lots of scope for boots, cashmere and beanies. And cashmere beanies!

Here’s my click and shop lowdown of all the autumn style essentials you’ll ever need…

autumn basics

hush Grey Tee | Acne Studios Sweater | Baukjen White Shirt | Jigsaw White Long Sleeve Tee | hush Black Tank | hush Black Joggers | Topshop Jeans | Topshop Sweatshirt | Hobbs Breton Top

A no brainer but fall is a great time to stock up on the layering basics. Not least because the weather feels so changeable right now – I’m pulling them on and off with alarming regularity!

When it comes to jeans, I’ve been a Topshop convert for ages now – I think denim is something they do so well and it won’t break the bank if you want to update your style selection a bit more frequently. Go for something in a mid-blue to cross over every season and I love a straight leg style with a (preferably raw hem) cropped just short enough to show off your autumn footwear of choice.

If you want to invest more in your denim check out similar styles at John Lewis and Net-A-Porter’s extensive selection.

And whilst its not too cold, now is the perfect time for those chunky sweater sans coat days. This one from Acne Studios is the dream.

Autumn Investments

The White Company Biker Jacket | Acne Studios Biker Jacket | Reiss Blazer | A.W.A.K.E. Stripe Shirt | Mansur Gavriel Beige Cashmere Sweater | hush Black Cashmere Sweater | hush Black Leather Leggings | J.Crew Trench Coat | Weekend MaxMara Coat

When it comes to the biker jacket, you’ll know from this post that I finally saw the light when it comes to dispensing with the faux leather number in favour of the real deal.

It’s fair to say you can expect to pay anything from £250 (Topshop Boutique have one) to well over £1,000 depending on your budget and where you shop. For a once in a lifetime purchase, my max out would have been about £400 I think.

Whilst you might not be needing a heavy winter coat just yet, now is the time to buy. In fact, a few weeks ago was probably prime time in terms of size availability and choice. Don’t put it off any longer.

For me cashmere is always worth investing in regardless of the season. And this autumn I’m thinking about finally going for a pair of leather leggings – can you imagine the cosy sweater or long shirt pairing options? Heaven!

Autumn Accessories

hush Cashmere Wrist Warmers | Topshop Tote | L.K. Bennett Ankle Boots | hush Cashmere Beanie | Topshop Loafers | hush Backless Loafers | hush Cashmere Scarf | Dorothy Perkins Ankle Boots | Sophie Hulme Cross Body Bag

Only in autumn (and winter) can you get away with as many cashmere accessories as possible. Wrist warmers, gloves, scarves and beanies – if you can make it in cashmere I need it!

Lets not forget that autumn is also the perfect excuse for another firm favourite of mine – ankle boot season. Over the years I’ve moved away from anything with too much of a heel and am now pretty much a flats only kinda gal. With the odd exception here and there.

And loafers – can we talk about how brilliant they are? With backs or without. You know I  don’t mind the odd cold ankle moment in autumn and I love a loafer and jean combo. Just add a long sleeve Tee, black blazer and a cashmere scarf and you have the ultimate in seasonal paired back chic.

Autumn Statement Pieces

And what about those statements pieces? I pondered for about… oooh five seconds before deciding to include a small selection in this post.

Whilst we can say that the items above are key when it comes to building a great collection of wardrobe staples, you might wonder why its so important to include a few fun elements.

Try scrolling through these without smiling…

I’m a firm believer in the concept of elevated style and including something that just makes you really happy once in a while.

There’s nothing better than swinging a bag from your wrist that makes your pulse race every time you look at it or slipping your toes into a pair of impractical but oh so pretty flats. Or pulling on a dress that instantly lifts your day out of the ordinary.

Because why not!

Take a look at my autumn style Pinterest board for lots more outfit inspiration and there’s plenty more goodies in the style edit too if you’re really feeling fall now.

Have you started your
autumn shopping list yet… and if so,
what’s your top priority purchase this season?

  1. I am in the process of deciding whether to buy a cashmere jumper…I had 2 gorgeous longline cashmere cardigans a couple of years ago that some moths then attacked…heartbroken..I have seen a lovely curved hem jumper in a grey in the white company that i would love but its 149 pounds and im trying to justify it yet it makes me feel greedy for wanting something so expensive….Im also wary as I need to be prepared to try and ensure no more moths! Uh bane of my life…I need to get some moth killers haha. I loved this the new style xxx

    1. I know what you mean Cheryl – investing in cashmere does feel incredibly indulgent.
If you can be sure you can store it well to avoid those nasty moths again then (of course!) I would advocate the spend.
A – because you deserve it and B – cashmere is such a joy to wear.
So glad you liked the post too!

  2. Excellent post because it covers all the basics that I look for at this time of year, and I love all your suggestions. I’m struggling with the new jeans shapes at the moment. Happy to show an ankle, especially with trainers, but just not sure about which jeans look best with which ankle boot style. I rely on lovely websites like yours for ideas.

    1. Thank you Annette!
So glad you liked the post and suggestions!
I know what you mean – the right crop and ankle boot needs to be experimented with a lot!
An almost crop with a raw hem always feels like a good option to me.
      Have a lovely weekend!
