As I write this, it’s rainy and dark out and even though I just had lunch (wholewheat pasta, mozzarella and tomato salad in case you were wondering), all I can think about is eating soup.
But not just any old soup. My childhood memories of this particular foodstuff are all tied up with cans of Heinz Cream of Tomato, Cream of Chicken and my least favourite… Minestrone.
As an adult, I never understood how any of these could constitute a meal. Where was the solid stuff?
So when I moved in with Mr OS and we would sit and think about the meals for the week ahead (which by the way, we still spend an inordinate amount of time doing), he would suggest soup. And I would wrinkle my nose in the manner of Meh…
Purely down to his perseverance and ability to gloss over my mutterings of “But I don’t like soup…” these days find me a bonafide soup convert. Especially when Autumn arrives.
There’s nothing better than taking beautiful fresh ingredients and transforming them into something that is literally good for your soul.
Especially when it requires the accompaniment of fresh bread or a glass of red wine. Or both.
Here’s my round up of delicious sounding autumn soups that will warm you from the inside out this season…
homemade smoked french onion soup
From: Waiting on Martha
But the recipes on here are some of the best. And any soup that involves oversized croutons and Gruyere cheese gets my vote every time!
broad bean + pea soup with black bread croutons, mozzarella + Anchovy
From: Anna Barnett Cooks
Well quite frankly you had me broad beans. I am obsessed with this particular vegetable ever since I couldn’t stop eating them when pregnant with H. A strange craving I know.
I met Anna at a blogger lunch at The Pig a couple of years ago and can confirm she is every bit as lovely as all her gorgeous recipes.
rustic italian butternut squash soup
From: Jessica Gavin
It’s not autumn unless you can make soup from butternut squash! For me its also the only way I’ll eat it after pureeing one too many of these when H was a baby.
I found Jessica’s blog via another recipe round up post and have had it bookmarked ever since. Not least because she uses Monterey Jack cheese in her macaroni & cheese bake!
ribollita – tuscan white bean soup
From: Love & Lemons
There seems to be a bit of Italian theme going on here. Which is more than alright with me.
How anything made from left over vegetables and stale bread can look this good I don’t know. But if anyone can transform food in this way, its Jeanine and her particular brand of culinary magic.
comforting beef barley soup
From: Little Spice Jar
When Marzia mentions this soup recipe in amongst words like fall, fuzzy socks, oversized sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes, you know I’ll be there!
I was honestly torn between featuring this one and the Roasted Garlic Potato soup. So you get both!
Spicy Corn Chowder
From: The Taste SF
I love any kind of corn chowder and agree with Nigel from The Devil Wears Prada on many things. All except his opinion that the main ingredient of corn chowder is cellulite.
spicy pumpkin + butter bean soup
From: Online Stylist!
And finally one of mine! I posted it here in 2013 and still like to make this one every autumn. The more spicy the better.
Jeez… I really need to up my food photography skills this year…
Do you love to make and eat autumn soups and if so, what’s your favourite warm and comforting recipe?
