It’s time for the season of cosy to begin…
Whether we like it or not, winter happens every year and I figure we can either fight it every step of the way or make it feel a little more welcome. There are so many good things to celebrate when it comes to the colder months and making your home a cosy, welcoming place with winter inspired interior accessories is just one of the ways to embrace the season with open (cashmere clad) arms.
It needn’t cost an arm and a leg – after all, who has the funds to give any room a full seasonal makeover when the temperature drops? Not us for sure.
But with small touches and resources gathered over the years, I love making our house, and living room in particular, feel appropriately seasonal at this time of year.
I know some feel that the word Hygge has been thrown about so much that it feels like nothing more than the next big insta cliche, but the concept is spot on. It encompasses everything I ever felt about the onset of autumn and winter but never knew quite how to put into words until those clever Danes gave it a name.
When it comes to gathering interior accessories, I have a few goto interior shopping resources that I always check out, be it at the change of the season or in an end of season sale if the price point is a little higher. Investment buys can always be stored away until the next season and the joy of re-discovery is not to be underestimated!

how i welcome winter into our home…
I always start by thinking about lighting as soon as the nights start to draw in.
More candles, softer toned bulbs, perhaps a darker lamp shade and also, where can I surreptitiously hang twinkle lights? Because a bIt of twinkle is not just for Christmas! During this trip to Gstaad, I remember finding out that they decorate the town with lights all winter long and thinking that it makes so much sense to light the darkness with glow seeing as we’re subjected to many more hours of it.
Adding in natural textures anywhere always gives an instant cosy feel too. I’ve just brought my Lauren Aston chunky knit blanket down from upstairs and draped it across the back of the sofa. Although if someone could please tell Biscuit it’s not there for her, that would be great!
The black and white IKEA cushions have now been put away in favour of the winter reindeers that I featured in last year’s autumn home post. I love a reindeer cushion but only neutral tones are allowed – no red or green for me! Ours are from John Lewis who have a similar style in stock again this year.
Create some wintery vignettes…
Oh how I love me a vignette – especially a wintery one! It’s like a licence to get practicing for your Holiday Season decoration skills a couple of months early! Think eucalyptus and white pumpkins in October through to full on holly sprigs and pine cones come December.
Gather from outside and then, if your stuck for ideas, take inspiration from some of your favourite homeware stores. Any good interiors retailer will include a styled shot of their product – case in point, this simple concrete plate set up from the the always gorgeous Garden Trading.
Slippers and blankets in baskets (this cotton storage basket from H&M is such a bargain!), are another cosy seasonal touch in a living room. I’m a huge Mahabis fan after treating myself and the Mr to some last year.
When I reach for the slippers in the basket at the end of the sofa, to me that means the work part of the day is done and its time to do the domestics… and then maybe find time to relax.
Actually, who am I kidding – my feet are usually in those babies all day long!
