Rocking a red lip…just because…
Nothing lifts me from the early morning blahs quite like the thrill of rocking a red lip.
But you can’t just be wearing red – you have to rock it!
Its not just that vivid splash of bright itself that lifts the spirits. For me the very act of deciding to wear it brings its own joy.
“You know what…today I will sport bright red lipstick. And for no real reason!” That thought process alone is enough to put a spring in my step and a smile on my face.
Is there any better combo than a grey T -shirt, jeans, hair scraped up into a top knot and a freshly applied MAC Lady Danger? Not in my book.
There’s a couple of shades that I wear that often draw a comment from other red lip lovers too. Us ruby red pout addicts will always ask a fellow lippy lover what shade of red she’s wearing.
The perfect shade of red is out
there in the cosmetic cosmos…
Possibly because we feel we haven’t yet found the perfect shade of red yet. It forever eludes us, lurking somewhere out there in the vast cosmetic cosmos.
When I find the shade I’ve been coveting I have been known to bulk buy a stock for fear of the dreaded “Sorry Madam, it’s been discontinued” line being delivered.
That’s enough to draw tears from the most stoic of red lipstick wearers. Right in the middle of the John Lewis Beauty Hall.
There’s a red out there for everyone – you just need to have to keep trying them out until you get it right.
3 Tips For Red Lips
Invest in a good lip primer – I use MAC Prep + Prime pictured here. It does wonders for getting your lippie to stay on longer plus lips feel more moisturised underneath. I use it when re-applying later too.
Mix up the density by applying a mix of balm and your favourite red and pat on with your finger for a more natural feel.
There’s plenty of red lip inspo here and you can shop some of my favourites below…
Rocking a Red Lip For #Kissoffdepression
I have another reason for sharing my five favourite reds with you too.
I was recently contacted by a lady called Jenny Rayner. She runs The Lucy Rayner Foundation which she set up after her daughter Lucy, then 22, took her own life after a silent battle with depression.
Lucy loved makeup but used it as a mask to hide her sensitivity and vulnerability from the rest of the world. Red was a signature lipstick shade that she loved to wear.
With the #KissOffDepression campaign, Jenny aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression and other related mental health issues in young people.
As a mum to a pre-teen who finds herself on the road to becoming a young adult and therefore exposed to all the pressures that come with, this story brought tears to my eyes when I read it.
I feel like its such an important message to get out there. We make a point of talking about anything and everything in our house in a bid to keep the channels of communication open and ensure that no subject becomes taboo. Feelings and moods come at the top of that list.
If you can spare five minutes to help raise awareness of this vitally important topic, Jenny has come up with a quick and easy way to spread the word:
💋 Put on your favourite shade of red lipstick
Post a selfie on Instagram and/or FaceBook with the hastag #KissoffDepression
Donate £2 to the Lucy Rayner Foundation by texting KISS05 to 70070
Tag a friend or two to do the same and pass it on! 💋
