My Summer Morning Beauty Routine

a quick & easy summer morning beauty routine

With a current view on simplifying life as much as possible, it was only a matter of time before my de-cluttering attentions turned toward the beauty products in my possession.

Don’t get me wrong, I can shop up a beauty storm with the rest of them. I have my goto brands, a few once in a while luxury treats and plenty of staples that I have to keep a spare stock of in a box in Mr OS’s man cave garage for those “just in case I run out” moments. No one wants to be stuck without their must-have product now do they? It may be a first world issue but my biggest fear is being halfway through an application of St Tropez Express and the bottle running out… aka the complete opposite of Ross from Friends and his two fours in the tanning booth.

As a perk of being a life and style blogger, being sent press samples is truly wonderful. I try them all out and include those that I like here or on Instagram if I think that you might like to try them too. Just because I like it or it has a good result for me, doesn’t mean it will be the same for you but I think most females on the planet are keen for a good beauty recommendation now and then.

But back to the summer vibe of less is more, despite having lots of product at my disposal, I’ve tried to whittle the whole Putting My Face On thing down to fewer items. Meaning ones that are easy to use, faff free (no brushes) and feel like a good fit for a summer morning beauty routine.

So without further ado, here’s the habit I’ve fallen into of late…

Prep

Before hopping in the shower I massage a little Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil in and rinse off whilst under the spray.

Once out, on goes a serum. As well as my regular Bobbi Brown Extra Repair, I’ve been trying out  No7’s latest offering, Laboratories Line Correcting Booster Serum and love both of these for a lightweight but effective pre-moisturiser layer.

A quick pat of Neal’s Yard Remedies Frankincense Intense Eye Cream and then a teeth clean before a healthy helping of Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Moisturising Balm. It’s SPF 25 which is fine if I’m mostly indoors but I’m just about to run out of my Decléor SPF so if anyone uses a great under make up sunscreen and would recommend it, let me know!

Makeup

I’ve pretty much been sticking with my Bobbi Brown fave – Nude Finish Tinted Moisturiser SPF 15, blended with fingers followed by this concealer and the Illuminating Powder – which is now the only element that requires a brush! Otherwise, if I want a bit more coverage, this foundation is a goto.

My perfect summer creamy blush is Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink followed by the tiniest pat of NARS Illuminator in Copacabana on cheekbones for some glow.

Next a sweeping of NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Corfu all over my eyelids and then I smudge in a darker line with Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Black Diamonds along the lash line. It’s all quick and no precision or brushes required. Onto brows… which recently required a spot of beauty stalking. After admiring her brows on Instagram Stories (as you do), I asked Monica what she was using. Say Hello to Benefit’s Goof Proof in shade No. 2. This double ended brush and pencil is brilliant so thanks for sharing your Wow Brow tip Monica!

When it comes to mascara, I fully admit to trying whatever I have in my sample box – so long as it’s black and the wand isn’t too fancy. I’m currently using and loving Clinique Chubby Lash but I’m also a big fan of DIORSHOW Waterproof Mascara and Benefit BADgal Black Lash too.

Then it’s on with whatever coloured lip balm I have to hand or a dab of the Pot Rouge and I’m ready to face the day. All in all – including the prep part, about seven minutes from start to finish.

Extras And Other Loves

If I’m taking any pics that require my face to be in them (and at the moment, I’m honestly avoiding that… because lack of sleep… because life), I’ll add a layer of Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow Face Primer underneath the tinted moisturiser and some Benefit The POREfessional over the ginormous craters pores on my forehead, chin and sides of my nose.

Whilst I use St Tropez for body glow, I tend to go for an overnight gradual tan for the face. At the moment it’s Xen-Tan Light Gradual Face Tanner a couple of times a week but have also used Institut Esthederm Sun Kissed Self-Tanning Face Cream in Light in the past too. Both give a subtle glow that doesn’t look over the top and can just be complimented by a bit of bronzer here and there.

I’ve been carrying around my beauty bits and pieces in the gorgeous Elizabeth Scarlett Lemons pouch ever since Lizzy kindly gifted me one at her launch event earlier this summer – it makes me smile every time I pick it up!

  1. I love your blog posts Amanda, and you write beautifully. But can I ask………what is it with the fake tan?? I see so many beauty bloggers religiously applying fake tan every single day, the routine appears to be gruelling to say the least! What is wrong with natural skin colour with a bit of natural sun exposure? Feeling very pale

    1. Hey Amanda – Aw thank you!
Speaking for myself (and definitely not as a fully fledged beauty blogger!), I just love a bit of a glow. My own routine is pretty minimal. One application of St Tropez Express will see me through the week… and I’m not that religious about doing it every week to be honest. It depends on if I have anything coming up. We have a wedding this weekend so I’ll break out the bottle for sure! The face part is easier – I just swap out nighttime moisturiser for the self tan twice a week. As for sun, whilst I love the warm weather, I can’t sit still in it so no sunbathing for me – too much of a fidget! But I love the gentle sun in the morning or evening for a walk at the beach so if I get some sun from that, it makes me very happy! I know lots of women (bloggers or otherwise) who love a summer faux glow sometimes and I guess it’s just that feel good factor that comes from a summer tan? Great news for wrinkle prevention and the self-tan industry! I absolutely don’t think its a necessary part of anyone’s beauty routine – its just whether you want to or not I guess. Or indeed can be bothered or have the time! And nothing wrong with a natural skin colour in my book – there’s beauty in every shade for sure! xx

      1. Ah thank you for your reply – I don’t like sitting in the sun either, and I love the healthy look I get from early morning walks with doggy when the sun is at it’s best, followed by a coffee in the garden before retreating to my desk inside. And then a later afternoon walk….I see the sense in a spray tan from time to time, especially for an event where extra flesh may be revealed. Thank you for sharing your life on your blogs and instagram (and YT), it’s really beautiful and uplifting.

    2. I love your blog too Amanda! – fake tan is great for not so perfect skin, thread veins, cellulite etc. I use a mixture of Palmers build up (very natural colour) and then if I’m out and want to expose my legs – Mac body makeup mixed in with “This works” leg oil. Im nearly 60 and this makes my legs look very acceptable in shorts! xx PS LOVE Nars SPF50 primer.

      1. Hi Jenny – thank you so much!
This is a great beauty tip for those times when unexpected leg exposure has to occur! Thank you!
Ooh and I definitely need to investigate the NARS SPF Primer – I love that brand so much. Am slightly worried it may be an addiction but their stuff is SO good isn’t it?!
        Amanda xx

  2. Currently using Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 and SmashBox Photo Finish primer under No. 7 CC cream which seems to stop the shinny look. Works for me. X

  3. Loved this Summer beauty routine post. Love Bobbi Brown, think I could be a little addicted :). Shall definitely try out the Jenny’s recommendation for Palmer’s on the legs.

    Shirley x
