These days my much loved, oft worn Hobbs trench coat is looking a little worse for wear, so I’ve decided that this spring is the spring that I’ll invest in a new one. Or as my friend Jo put it… “time to upgrade the trench coat!”.
I consider a classic trench to be a style staple must have and with a view to that, I’m considering combining birthday monies with existing funds and going for an investment buy. The dream would be to aim for the big guns of Burberry but at these prices I think some dreams are best left being exactly that.
There are so many beautiful trench coats out there and who better to help me make a decision than you lovely people. After all, you did me proud on the Great Acne Pistol Boot Debate! Here’s a few contenders I’ve found so far…
1. Theory trench coat – £190.76 The Outnet 2. Classic belted trench – £125 Banana Republic 3. Collection Icon trench – £250.52 J.Crew 4. A.P.C. Gaberdine classic trench – £350 My-Wardrobe 5. Whistles Riley trench – £155 John Lewis

Hi there! I agree, the Whistles trench is perfectly styled to give it a modern, timeless appeal and would be my choice out of these!
Hey sweet – mine is from Jigsaw and has always been fab. I have in black and the traditional pale and it always makes an outfit look slightly more than it was! I too yearn for a Burberry – one day! But the prices are prohibitive. I do love their website ‘the art of the trench’ though – it shows it worn by the great public in every which way. If you’re after inspiration! Lou x
I would go for the Theory trench, purely because I think the colour is the best. Overall, I have to confess that I’m not really a fan of trench coats .. should I go hide now, before the Fashion Police come knocking?!!
Haha…not at all! It’s good to be different…and I still can’t decide between the two!
I think I’d go for the Theory one, personally. I’m lucky to have an Aquascutum one, which I just adore- thank heaven for outlet shops!!
Club Monaco! Found out by chance that they are machine washable – I just hate paying silly money for dry cleaning… Hope you are well, lovely lady. Looks like you are lusting after spring, just like me… Xx
I love the Theory one! Now I don’t mean to boast but that Reiss one I got last January in the sales for a steal after seeing it featured by OLS has been amazing – I couldn’t love a trench coat more! xxx
I love the Banana Republic one – I’ve coveted them for a long time
The mission for e perfect trench is a never ending one though!
I actually ordered one from moodbyme.com last summer and it is fantastic. It has all the classic stylings but you get to pick everything from colour, finishes, the lining. I love mine. I want to get a tuxedo blazer from them too!
Trenches are such a timeless classic piece. My favourite is the Whistles one.

I have been getting my knickers in a twist over the Whistles Riley Trench, so that would be my no 1 choice. Kat xx
I hope you don’t mind but I’m going to throw a spanner in the works but only because if you are investing you want what’s absolutely perfect for you. The classic trench doesn’t suit everyone -certainly not those of us like me endowed with more than the average bust! I wrote a piece recently about the right mac for your shape, colouring & personality that might help http://www.lookingstylish.co.uk/2013/01/16/capsule-wardrobe-key-pieces/ you’d look great in a blue with your blue eyes if you wanted an alternative colour. Sorry if I’ve made the decision harder. Wish I suited this classic piece but sadly I don’t. Xx
The Theory, for the colour.
I would pick the Theory one too! Love that slightly more grey colour. Saw a gorgeous one at a Boden party yesterday actually…with a really fine check. Burberry-esque but much more subtle. Loved it just because it was just a bit different. Happy shopping – I look forward to seeing what you pick up, Avril x
Have you looked at the Karen Millen one? Not cheap at £235 but perfect for the well-endowed. It’s single breasted with darker (slimming) waist inserts. I’m very tempted….
The Whistles one is fabulous- classic – but with nice details, that make it look high end.
In the March copy of Elle (BTW could it be any thicker?) on p181 they feature a white trench from Benetton. I know its impractical but something about it calls me…….
When something calls it hard to resist…I know!
